Thanks for your comments and the links which I hope others have also followed. I hope you'll be able to join us for the discussions in May (see my recent post). You might also be interested in some of the discussions we've been having recently around the idea of 'transition universities' through the crisis forum. I came across this group recently - http://www.embercombe.co.uk/ - whose work I thought you might find interesting. I'm sure, also, you will find Peter Moss and Michael Fielding's work on 'the common school' important in addressing both moral purpose and capacity. I think there's an interesting question as to whether we are seeking to prepare children for one particular future, or to build their own, which I'd like to explore with you offline if you're able to make the sessions in May. Ironically, it is my area of interest! I have a range of materials that help combine functionality with moral purpose in the curriculum. I am also developing a Pedagogical Oath, in order to strengthen future professional ethics. If anyone is interested please visit my website www.johnpearce.org.uk and download a powerpoint, "Leading Learning for Interdependence – about building capacity and moral purpose" or the Pedagogical Oath. As the paper says, educators and learners need "to develop strategies that allow them to act in and upon the world and to imagine, shape and build their own desirable futures". One way to "act in and upon the world" is to have position power, eg through being employed in a position of responsibility. This begs the question of how today's school learners can anticipate future employment possibilities and can act appropriately. If we have worthwhile insights into this, will we act ethically in sharing insights into those possibilities, so that we don't give preferential treatment to people like us, privileging the north over the south?
